Genomics is one of the fastest growing areas of science and a field with huge contributions to make towards human health, food security and climate change. Based at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory’s European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK, Ensembl is one of the world’s leading resources for genomic research and is accessed by thousands of researchers from around the globe every day. You will have a unique opportunity to change the way users can view and use this genomic data.
You will work with our Senior UX Designer, Outreach and a team of highly skilled developers to help advance and refine how we conceptualise, communicate and present data to maximise benefit to our users – scientific, medical and agricultural researchers – as they navigate and explore big genomic data. We encourage you to be creative, finding solutions that are both functional and elegant as they meet our users needs. Please note, this is not a mobile first project.
As a member of the Genomics Technology Infrastructure team you will play a key role in the redevelopment of the Ensembl website. You will help identify user needs, adding value by turning their requirements into outstanding experiences through planning, conducting and analysing research activities including:
- Organise and conduct remote user interviews & surveys (supported by our Outreach team)
- Establish and refine usability through concept or prototype testing
- Gather analytics and other usage data from multiple sources
- Organise, facilitate and analyse findings from (occasional) collaborative UX workshops
- Create solutions that will ensure our web interfaces deliver an effective and consistent user experience
- Present evidence-based solutions in appropriate prototype and/or specification formats
- Work closely with the team to ensure proposed solutions are fit for development before going into production
- Continue engaging with internal and external users during design and implementation phases
You will bring significant experience working in a user research centric role, with a demonstrable ability to create and take solutions through to implementation. Appropriate experience may have been in any combination of commercial, production or academic research settings.
As an excellent communicator, you will have a talent for working with a diverse audience and the teamwork skills to work closely with others to shape and implement your ideas. You should also understand the principles of interaction design and how they apply to web interfaces. Accuracy and attention to detail are essential.
We take an agile approach to our work in response to user and scientific input, so you will need to quickly adapt and change solutions as required.
You might also have
Experience in using Google Analytics, Adobe XD and Omnigraffle would be an advantage. Previous experience of working with biological data would be advantageous.
